Qualifying

Qualifying was dramatic Albon had issues with his car and did not record a time in Q1 and in a shock performance Hamilton just made it out being 15th fastest on the grid. In Q2 Sainz went off into the wall, which cause a red flag and during the break to clear the track the rain started to pour, eventually the decision was made to finish Q2 and the bottom 5 drivers were knocked out, this included both Mercedes drivers. Sainz having already secured a faster time made it to Q3 but was unable to drive. There were 3 red flags in Q3 caused by Magnusson, Bottas and Norris, however Verstappen managed to get the fastest time so was on pole for the sprint.

Sprint Race

The first sprint of 2022 delivered, in the first lap Leclerc overtook Verstappen, Checo made it up to 5th and Zho spun off the track causing a safety car. Lap 11 saw Checo move on Norris and make his way into 3rd as well as Ricciardo driving on the inside of Magnusson into 5th. Sainz had been storming down around the track to gain positions after starting in 10th and overtook both McLarens to finish the sprint in 4th. Lap 20 of 21 saw Verstappen take a final lunge around the outside on Leclerc into the chicane to take 1stposition from the Ferrari driver, leaving them both starting the race on the front row with Checo and Sainz the second row

Race Day

It was the best start for either Ferrari's, Leclerc was overtaken by both Checo and Norris within the first few corners. Sainz was hit from behind by Ricciardo causing them both to spin off the track, while Ricardo managed to continue the race the Ferrari driver was not as lucky having to retire for the 2nd race in a row, 30 seconds into his teams home Grand Prix. The track was quite wet and contact between Alonso and Hamilton in lap 7 lead to damage on the Alpine and another race that Alonso had to retire. Checo started to struggle as while warming up his new tyres as Verstappen and Leclerc both pitted but managed to overtake the Ferrari for Red Bull to claim both 1st and 2nd with Leclerc just seconds behind. Lap 53 saw heartbreak for Leclerc and Ferrari as he took too much of the corner and spun off the track to the wall, although he was able to continue, he lost multiple positions finally finishing in 6th. Magnusson, Russel and Bottas were locked in a battle for 5th place all race with the position changing constantly with Russell ending up taking the spoils and coming in 4th. It was Red Bull’s first 1-2 of the season with Norris collecting 3rd, his 3rd podium in Italy in as many races!
