Champions League Final 2022

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

Real Madrid vs Liverpool, two powerhouses of European football went head-to-head for the most prestigious club trophy there is. The match was delayed in starting due to issues with French police and ticketing outside the stadium, which might be because this final had been scheduled to be in St Petersburg and was only moved to Paris in March. As far as finals go it was not the most exciting match, Liverpool were the more dominant team to start the match and Courtois was put on the spot pretty much right away. The Belgium keeper made save after save, proving himself to anyone who had doubted him.

One such save came 20 minutes in as Thiago slotted the ball through to Mane whose superb strike hit the tips of Courtois’s fingers as the keeper pushed the ball into the post and pounced on the rebound. A few minutes later Salah produced a powerful header which went straight to Courtois, who seemed to be everywhere. Just before halftime Benzema managed to put the ball in the back of the Liverpool net although he was called offside by the slimmest of margins.

The second half saw more of the same and Liverpool peppering Real Madrid’s goal with attempts, none of which they could put past Courtois. Just before the hour mark Real Madrid countered one of Liverpool’s presses as Valverde collected the ball and ran down the side of the pitch, crossing it through the Liverpool box to the far side of the goal where Vinicius Jr was able to drive the ball into a seemingly open goal. This was 1 of the just 2 shots on target that Real Madrid produced, fortunately for them and thanks to Courtois despite Liverpool’s 9 shots on target the reds were never able to find the back of the net. It was a deserving man of the match performance from Courtois who is the reason Real Madrid clinched the Champions League for the 14th time with a 1-0 win over Liverpool.
